Infant Mortality Awareness Month, observed every September, is a critical time to shine a spotlight on a heartbreaking reality: the loss of infant lives. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about the factors contributing to infant mortality and inspiring action to reduce its devastating impact. In this blog, we’ll explore what infant mortality is, its major causes, and the essential steps we can take to support and protect our most vulnerable population.
During the month of September, we posted daily information via social media and hosted three events to spread awareness in a few of the communities we serve (Dillon, Williamsburg, and Marion counties).
Understanding Infant Mortality:
Infant mortality is a distressing statistic representing the death of infants before their first birthday. It is a harsh reminder of the fragility of life during the earliest stages. In the United States, the infant mortality rate has been a longstanding concern. The loss of young lives carries not only emotional but also societal and economic implications.
Causes of Infant Mortality:
Preterm Birth: Babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy are more susceptible to health complications and are at a higher risk of mortality.
Low Birth Weight: Babies born with low birth weight are often at risk for various health issues, including respiratory distress syndrome and infections.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS): SIDS is an unexplained cause of death typically occurring during sleep and is a major concern for parents.
Birth Defects: Congenital birth defects can lead to infant mortality if not detected and addressed early.
Lack of Access to Prenatal Care: Insufficient prenatal care can result in undiagnosed health issues and complications that may lead to infant mortality.

Taking Action during Infant Mortality Awareness Month:
Raise Awareness: Spread the word about infant mortality, its causes, and its impact on communities to ensure that it remains a topic of discussion.
Support At-Risk Families: Provide assistance and resources to pregnant women and families who may be at risk for infant mortality. This includes access to prenatal care, education, and financial support.
Promote Safe Sleep Practices: Educate parents and caregivers on safe sleep guidelines to reduce the risk of SIDS.
Advocate for Healthcare Access: Support policies and programs that ensure equitable access to healthcare and prenatal services for all communities.
Advance Medical Research: Invest in research focused on understanding and preventing the causes of infant mortality.
Remember and Honor: Pay tribute to the infants who lost their lives and their families through memorial events and acts of kindness.
Infant Mortality Awareness Month is a solemn reminder of the work that remains to be done to protect our most vulnerable population. By raising awareness, advocating for equitable access to healthcare, and supporting at-risk families, we can make progress in reducing infant mortality and ensuring that every baby has a healthy start in life. Let this month serve as a call to action to protect our future generations.
