Facing the Facts: Understanding Opioids and Finding Help

Opioids are a class of drugs that can be both lifesaving and life threatening. From pain relief to addiction, the impact of these substances is complex, and our community is experiencing it.

So, what exactly are opioids?

Opioids include natural, semi-synthetic, and synthetic drugs. You may recognize names like morphine and codeine (natural opioids), or prescription painkillers like oxycodone and hydrocodone (semi-synthetic). Then there are synthetic opioids like fentanyl, which are entirely man made and far more potent. Illegal drugs like heroin also fall under this category.

These drugs are designed to relieve pain and create feelings of relaxation and euphoria, but they come with serious risks. Opioids can cloud judgment, impair concentration, and most dangerously cause overdose, even when used for a short time under medical supervision.

The Stakes Are Higher for Mothers and Babies

For pregnant women, opioid misuse can have heartbreaking consequences. Without treatment and proper prenatal care, both the mother and baby are at risk. Infants exposed to opioids in the womb may be born prematurely, underweight, or suffer from neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS), which can cause tremors, irritability, and feeding issues shortly after birth.
