[Florence. SC February 2024] – In the face of ongoing nationwide maternal and infant health crises, Healthy Start, a program historically backed by bipartisan support, finds itself at a critical juncture. Recent decisions in funding allocations, such as the elimination of $145 million in H.R. 5894, have placed this vital initiative in jeopardy. This impacts over 100 federally funded Healthy Start grantees around the country.
Contrary to misconceptions, Healthy Start stands as a distinct and indispensable component in the national endeavor to combat infant and maternal mortality. Its unique contributions are essential in addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by vulnerable mothers, babies, and families.
The mistaken belief that Healthy Start duplicates existing programs, such as the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program, has led to this detrimental funding decision. However, Healthy Start’s proven track record and specialized focus demonstrate its unparalleled value in providing critical support to communities nationwide.
As advocates for the health and well-being of all Americans, it is imperative that we rectify this misunderstanding and ensure the continued funding and support for Healthy Start. Every dollar invested in Healthy Start is an investment in the lives of countless families and the future of our nation’s health.
Pee Dee Healthy Start, operating in Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion, Marlboro, and Williamsburg Counties, is a prominent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a 30-year track record of effective community service in the Pee Dee region. Established in 1991, this initiative emerged in response to alarming rates of infant mortality, low birth weight infants, and insufficient healthcare for women of childbearing age, particularly in the rural counties of South Carolina’s Pee Dee region. With a strong community presence and commitment to addressing critical health challenges, Pee Dee Healthy Start continues to significantly impact maternal and infant well-being.
We urge Congress to reconsider and reinstate funding for Healthy Start, recognizing its distinct role in addressing the ongoing infant and maternal mortality crises. Together, let us stand in solidarity to safeguard the health and prosperity of our communities.
